About St James the Less
St James the Less is the Church of England parish church serving Lancing with Coombes in West Sussex. Situated in the historic settlement of North Lancing, it remains an active place of Anglican worship. The church is protected at Grade I in recognition of its architectural and historic significance.
A church was established here during the 12th century, with surviving masonry suggesting work around 1120. Although parts are Norman, the building largely reflects a reconstruction undertaken from about 1280 to 1300, showing the development from Early English to Decorated Gothic design. Built mainly from flint cobbles with ashlar details, it has an aisled nave, chancel, south porch and short tower. The tower partly collapsed in 1618 and was subsequently reduced in height beneath a shallow pyramidal roof typical of Sussex. After becoming unusable by 1662, the church was repaired in the late 18th century and more extensively restored in 1827. A vestry was added in 1934.
