About St Mary's, Aldridge Parish Church
St Mary’s, Aldridge Parish Church stands on The Green in Aldridge, within Walsall in the West Midlands. It remains the Church of England parish church for the town and is protected as a Grade II* listed building. Aldridge’s war memorial is situated on the adjoining green.
Documentary evidence places the church’s origins before 1257. Its medieval tower dates from the 14th century, while the remaining outer walls were constructed or substantially renewed from 1841 to 1853. A vestry was built on the south side in 1975, and the pews and choir seating were taken out during work carried out between 1991 and 1995. Inside are two medieval effigies: one commemorates Sir Robert de Stapleton, lord of Great Barr and Aldridge around the late 13th century, and the other depicts a 14th-century priest, perhaps Roger de Elyngton.
