The Church of Saint Matthew stands on Church Hill in Walsall, West Midlands, and continues to serve its Church of England parish. It is protected at Grade II* and appears on Historic England’s register of heritage sites considered at risk.
The parish can trace its recorded history to 1211, when King John selected Serlo De Sunning as its inaugural rector. Surviving fabric from a previous place of worship, constructed around 1220 and known as All Saints, was incorporated into the current building. Francis Goodwin oversaw an extensive rebuilding programme during 1820 and 1821, after which Saint Matthew became its dedication. The east window serves as a memorial to Sister Dora, with stained glass made by Burlison and Grylls.
