About Parish Church of Saint Gabriel, Fulbrook
The Parish Church of Saint Gabriel, Fulbrook serves a Church of England parish in Walsall, West Midlands, encompassing Caldmore, Bescot, The Delves, Palfrey, Tamebridge and Yew Tree. It remains an active place of worship within the Traditional Catholic tradition, with episcopal care provided by the Bishop of Oswestry. The church is designated Grade II.
Its roots lie in a modest brick chapel built at Delves Common in 1850 for farm workers and local households. Population growth prompted the establishment of a distinct ecclesiastical district in 1936, followed by work on the present building in 1938. Richard Twentyman, of the Wolverhampton practice Lavender and Twentyman, helped create the design. Brick walls rise from concrete footings, with Clipsham stone used around the windows and along the roofline. Steel and concrete form the roof structure. A compact chancel beneath a tower was planned to improve views from the nave. The surviving tubular chimes, once played through a keyboard and relayed outdoors electronically, are no longer operational.
