About St James Church, Hill

St James Church, Hill stands on Mere Green Road in Sutton Coldfield’s Mere Green area. It remains a local Church of England parish church and is recognised for its architectural and historic significance through Grade II listing. The church has held separate parish status since 1853.

Completed in 1835, the building was planned by architect Daniel Rollinson Hill and dedicated for worship on 14 December. It began as an offshoot of Holy Trinity in Sutton Coldfield before receiving territory for a distinct parish. Charles Edward Bateman substantially altered the building in 1908, creating another chancel and adding transepts, vestries and space for the organ. A proposal to remodel the remainder in a matching form was left unfinished. The church also housed an instrument made by Forster and Andrews, first heard in recital on 7 June 1853. In 1890, some of its parish territory was transferred to the newly established All Saints at Four Oaks.
