About St Alphege Church

St Alphege Church is an active Church of England parish church in The Square, Solihull, in the West Midlands. Dedicated to St Alphege, it is a Grade I listed medieval building and forms part of a local team with St Helen’s and St Michael’s churches.

A smaller church stood here in the late 12th century, with surviving traces incorporated into the present structure. Successive enlargements added the chancel, chapels, transepts, aisles and porch, creating a cross-shaped plan centred on a tower. The tower’s upper stage dates from 1470, while its octagonal spire was rebuilt at a reduced height after the earlier one fell in 1757. Repairs and restoration included roof work in 1879 and reconstruction of the beetle-damaged chancel roof in 1933. The thirteen bells were recast and rehung in 1932. Notable fittings include medieval screen work, five chapels and a pipe organ with 17th-century origins.
