About Shirley Baptist Church
Shirley Baptist Church is a congregation on Stratford Road in Solihull, close to Birmingham. Its associated halls look towards Trinity Place within Parkgate’s traffic-free shopping area. The church belongs to Great Britain’s Baptist Union and is also affiliated with the Evangelical Alliance.
Local Baptist worship can be traced to 1797, when worshippers linked to Cannon Street’s congregation in Birmingham met under the Revd Samuel Pearce in a converted public house near today’s junction of Olton Road and Stratford Road. A purpose-built chapel near Sandy Hill Farm followed in 1845. The present church was completed in 1910, financed by Robert and Mrs Braithwaite to commemorate her parents, the Guy family. Its formal title is Guy Memorial Chapel. Additional rooms were built behind it in 1913 and enlarged during the 1930s. Those facilities and the caretaker’s residence were taken down in 2012, with new premises formally opened by Solihull’s Deputy Mayor, Councillor Ken Hawkins, in 2013.
