About Dumbarton Collegiate Church
Dumbarton Collegiate Church, dedicated to St Mary, formerly stood in Dumbarton, West Dunbartonshire. It is no longer in use, having closed during Scotland’s religious upheavals in the sixteenth century. Dumbarton Central station occupies the original location, while a single tower arch is the only surviving part of the structure.
Isabella, Duchess of Albany and Countess of Lennox, founded the collegiate institution around 1453. Its work included supporting ill and older residents through a hospital connected to the principal building. People affected by leprosy were accommodated separately, at some distance from central Dumbarton. In 1850, the remaining masonry arch was transferred to Church Street. It was moved once more in 1907 and now stands within the grounds of Dumbarton’s registry office, near the station.
