About St Luke's Church, Wallsend

St Luke’s Church, Wallsend is a Church of England church near Station Road in central Wallsend, Tyne and Wear. The Grade II listed building shares a parish with neighbouring St Peter’s following their reunification in 2001. Alterations completed in 2010 created halls and a kitchen at the west end, enabling the church to accommodate community groups. Its vestries also house a charity supporting refugees and people seeking asylum across North Tyneside.

Created as Wallsend expanded through coal mining and shipbuilding, the parish was established from part of St Peter’s. The foundation stone was set in 1885, the church was consecrated two years later, and work continued until 1906. Oliver, Leeson & Wood designed the building in an Early English Gothic style. Its prominent tower was intended to have a spire, but unstable sandy ground prevented its construction. Notable interior features include an Abbott and Smith pipe organ and Wilhelmina Geddes’s east window, installed in 1922 to commemorate parishioners killed while serving in the First World War.
