About Church of St Peter

The Church of St Peter is a Church of England parish church on the eastern side of Wallsend in Tyne and Wear. It is the town’s oldest parish church and is designated Grade II*. The church follows the Anglo-Catholic tradition and has shared a parish with St Luke’s, Wallsend, since 2001.

Built after the medieval Holy Cross Church became unusable, the foundation stone was laid in 1807 and the burial ground consecrated in 1809. Extensive alterations in 1892 reshaped the Georgian building in the Perpendicular style. Structural repairs funded in the late 1990s strengthened the chancel, which was converted into a hall. Notable furnishings include a font formerly belonging to Holy Cross and an 1892 pipe organ by Harrison & Harrison. The stained glass includes work associated with the early twentieth-century Tower of Glass movement and Thomas Denny’s Stella Maris window, installed in 2017. Memorial plaques in the churchyard commemorate local colliery disasters of 1815 and 1835.
