Sunderland Minster is an Anglican place of worship on High Street West in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear. Its full dedication honours St Michael, the angels and St Benedict Biscop. Although its responsibility for the Bishopwearmouth parish ended in 2007, the church remains a venue for worship and commemorative occasions involving the wider city. It is protected as a Grade II* listed building and is a member of the Greater Churches Group.
Bishopwearmouth’s parish dates from about AD 940, and a stone building for worship followed soon afterwards. Archaeological work in the 1930s revealed masonry from the Saxon period, confirming the site’s long religious history. Ground movement caused by coal mining prompted an almost complete reconstruction during the early 1900s, though elements of the preceding structure were retained. Following Sunderland’s recognition as a city, the church took its present name and minster designation in January 1998. St Benedict Biscop was added to its dedication during 2007, when he was adopted as the city’s patron saint.
