The Parish Church of Saint Peter Hilton stands on Yarm Road in Hilton, close to Yarm in North Yorkshire. It is a Church of England parish church that continues to welcome worship, within the Diocese of York. The building received Grade I protection in 1966, reflecting the importance of its largely surviving Norman character.
Dating to about 1150, the church originated as a subsidiary place of worship for the Hilton estate in the wider parish of Rudby-in-Cleveland. It later belonged to Gisborough Priory before passing to lay ownership after the monasteries were dissolved. Sandstone masonry and clay pantiles form the modest building, where the nave and sanctuary share one uninterrupted roof. Extensive Victorian reconstruction was avoided. During careful work led by C. J. Adams in 1888, the roof was repaired and sealed medieval windows were uncovered. Significant details include the round-headed southern doorway, carved faces and creatures beneath the eaves, a Norman arch before the chancel, an early stone font, enclosed pews and family memorials.
