About St Mary's Church, Sunderland
St Mary’s Church, Sunderland serves a Roman Catholic parish in central Sunderland, Tyne and Wear. Located at the junction of Bridge Street with St Mary’s Way, the church holds Grade II listed status and continues to celebrate Mass each Sunday.
Ignatius Bonomi drew up the plans in 1830, providing space for 1,200 worshippers and anticipating later enlargement. Completed and opened in 1835, the building is Sunderland’s earliest remaining example of Gothic Revival church architecture. Two chapels were constructed alongside the main body in 1852 to serve an expanding Catholic community. Wartime bombing in 1943 caused serious harm to the roof and ruined much of the stained glass. The roof was reconstructed, and new windows made by the Netherlands-based Jansen & Co. were fitted during 1946 and 1947. An organ transferred from the Rex Theatre, South Shields, was installed in 1937 and restored in 1992. The interior was reorganised in 1982, with further repair and decorative work undertaken in 2002 and 2003.
