About Holy Trinity Church, Sunderland

Holy Trinity Church, Sunderland is a former Church of England parish church in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear. Opened in 1719, it served the city’s eastern community until declining attendance led to its closure in 1988. This Grade I listed building is now cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust and has been adapted as a cultural and community venue.

Built of brick in the Baroque style, the church has stone detailing around its windows and entrances. Its interior is arranged with a nave and aisles, divided by Corinthian columns, with galleries along the sides and western end. A broad, almost circular apse was added at the east end in 1735 and includes a Venetian window. The roof was renewed and raised in 1803 to accommodate another gallery. Stained glass showing the Ascension was installed in 1857, while the churchyard contains an 1888 memorial to Sunderland sailor Jack Crawford.
