About St George's Cullercoats
St George's Cullercoats is an active Church of England parish church in North Shields, Tyne and Wear. It continues to serve as a place of worship and is protected as a Grade I listed building.
Completed in 1884, the church was designed by John Loughborough Pearson in a French Gothic style and built by the sixth Duke of Northumberland. Its coastal position overlooks the North Sea, while its 180-foot spire once helped local fishermen and larger vessels nearing Tynemouth to navigate. Conservation work has addressed corroded masonry, repaired the roof and cleaned stained glass. The organ, made by Thomas Christopher Lewis with advice from Newcastle organist William Rea, was dedicated in February 1885 and restored in 1987. It remains largely unaltered. Four stationary bells are sounded by rope-operated hammers.
