About St Peter's Church, Old Woking

St Peter’s Church stands at Old Woking in Surrey and belongs to the Church of England. Formerly serving the wider Woking parish, it retained its village setting after the modern town developed near the railway. The building lies in Old Woking’s designated conservation district and holds Grade I listed protection.

Christian worship on the site has ancient roots. A written account dates a minster dedicated to Peter to 675, and Domesday records a church at Woking. The present structure began as a rectangular Norman building that replaced an earlier wooden Saxon church; sections of its northern and western nave walls remain. Flint and puddingstone were used for the tower’s lower stage, erected between about 1200 and 1220, while the upper stage dates from roughly 1340. A south aisle was added during the fourteenth or early fifteenth century. Its Norman oak door, bearing medieval metalwork, is Surrey’s oldest and probably Britain’s third earliest surviving example. The Zouche Gallery dates to 1622.
