About St John's Church, Woking

St John’s Church, Woking is a Church of England parish church in St John’s, Surrey, within the Diocese of Guildford and the Province of Canterbury. The village took its name from the church. Today, its parish follows the Church of England’s conservative evangelical tradition, and its parochial church council has endorsed the Jerusalem Declaration associated with GAFCON.

Built in 1842, the church was designed by George Gilbert Scott after the vicar of St Peter’s, Old Woking, raised funds for the growing community west of his parish. It was consecrated on 24 June that year. Scott’s Gothic Revival design used stone resembling the materials of medieval churches. Aisles and vestries were added between 1879 and 1883, approximately doubling the building’s size. Notable features include Munich-made stained glass commemorating Charles Bowles, an oak pulpit installed in 1899, Exeter-made furnishings from 1915, and mosaic floor tiles produced by women imprisoned at the former Woking Prison.
