About St Mary & St Nicholas
St Mary & St Nicholas is the Church of England parish church serving Leatherhead in Surrey. Established in about the eleventh century, it is still used for Christian worship and parish life. The building is protected at Grade II*, recognising its special historic and architectural interest.
Much of the present structure belongs to the opening decades of the thirteenth century, and the nave has been dated to approximately 1210. Its arcades reflect French architectural influence from the transition towards Gothic design. A more elaborate tower was added near the end of the fifteenth century, distinguished by broad corner supports, decorative window tracery and sculpted panels over the western entrance. Arthur Blomfield undertook substantial work in the Victorian period, when glass windows were also installed. Further features include Annunciation paintings flanking the opening into the chancel and Admiral Sir James Wishart’s monument, which incorporates miniature ships. A pipe organ reconstructed from surviving eighteenth-century components has been played regularly since its installation in 2007.
