Edward Maufe designed the red-brick cathedral in a modern Gothic Revival style. Its foundation stone was placed in 1936, before construction paused during the Second World War. Building resumed after the war, supported from 1952 by a campaign through which more than 200,000 people sponsored bricks. Consecrated in 1961 and completed in 1965, the building has a broad nave, pale limestone columns and Italian marble floors. Its 49-metre tower houses twelve bells and is crowned by a gilded angel that turns with the wind.
