Bethel Chapel is an independent Reformed Baptist church on The Bars in central Guildford, Surrey. Established in 1879, the church continues to use its purpose-built chapel, together with the additional rooms completed during the following decades.
The congregation began meeting in rented premises in Ward Street after a small group separated from the Baptist chapel in Castle Street in 1878. Its first dedicated home was a temporary corrugated-iron structure in Martyr Road. A permanent red-brick chapel opened at The Bars in June 1910, with rounded windows picked out in grey brick. Because surrounding buildings restrict daylight, a prominent dormer over the entrance provides much of the interior light. The design has an Arts and Crafts character, while the pulpit, pews and other early fittings remain. An extension containing a schoolroom, hall, vestry and toilets was added in 1930, and the front dormer has since undergone repairs.
