About St Nicolas' Church, Guildford
St Nicolas' Church, Guildford is an active Church of England parish church beside the River Wey, near the foot of the High Street and the pedestrian Town Bridge. It belongs to one of Guildford’s three historic parishes and is protected as a Grade II* listed building. The parish also contains Loseley and the ruins of St Catherine’s Chapel.
Consecrated in 1876, the present building is the third church to occupy the site. Samuel Sanders Teulon designed it using Bargate stone, with contrasting lighter masonry on the square bell tower. Its architectural details include lancet windows, paired circular openings, internal arches and columns, and a long slate roof crowned by a stone cross. The eastern end forms a rounded, vaulted apse with mosaics and marble paving. A memorial chapel dating from about 1550 adjoins the south side and commemorates the More family, later known as the More-Molyneux family.
