About St Mary's Church
St Mary’s Church stands on Quarry Street in Guildford, Surrey. This Church of England parish church is within the Diocese of Guildford and was designated Grade I in 1953. It now forms one congregation with Guildford Methodist Church and shares a parish with Holy Trinity. Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, better known as Lewis Carroll, preached here on occasion, and his funeral service was conducted here in 1898.
A stone building was established on the site around 1040, perhaps succeeding a wooden church dating to about 600. Its Anglo-Saxon tower, constructed from roughly worked flint, is Guildford’s earliest remaining example of architecture. Following acquisition by Merton Priory’s canons around 1120, the church was remodelled into its present cross-shaped arrangement. Considerable portions were built during the 1180s. The chancel was reduced in length when Quarry Street was broadened in 1825, while Thomas Goodchild oversaw restoration work in 1862. Features include medieval carved corbels, Victorian fittings and an east window illustrating scenes from Christ’s life.
