About Holy Trinity Church, Guildford
Holy Trinity Church, Guildford is an active Anglican parish church near the heart of Guildford in Surrey. It belongs to the Church of England and now shares a town-centre parish with Saint Mary’s. The building has Grade I protection. After the Guildford diocese was formed in 1927, the church served as its temporary cathedral until the new cathedral was consecrated in 1961.
An earlier mediaeval building occupied the site until its steeple gave way in 1740, ruining most of the structure. The Weston Chapel survived; Richard Weston had commissioned it around 1540 for his burial, using flint and pale stone in a chequered design. A substantial Georgian replacement by James Horne was constructed in red brick and opened in 1763. Its notable interior includes an exceptionally broad self-supporting ceiling and painted scenes showing Christ on the cross, holy figures and the risen Christ in heaven. Memorials connected with the Weston family also remain.
