About St Mary The Virgin

St Mary The Virgin is a Church of England church in Epsom, Surrey. It serves as the civic church for the Borough of Epsom and Ewell and is protected as a Grade II listed building.

A church dedicated to the Virgin Mary has existed here since the thirteenth century. The earlier building was largely demolished because of its poor structural condition, although its fifteenth-century bell tower remains in the churchyard. Henry Clutton designed the present church, which was dedicated in 1848 and built in a restrained Decorated Gothic style using Swanage stone with Bath stone detailing. The north aisle was extended later in the nineteenth century, while the vaulted western porch dates from around 1905. Inside are a marble pulpit, a medieval font and a chancel screen retained from the former church. A boiler explosion caused a fire in 1973, destroying the north aisle and its organ. The replacement, made by Henry Willis in 1889 for a Highbury church, was installed in 1975.
