About St Mary's Church, Ickworth
St Mary’s Church, Ickworth stands within Ickworth Park at Whepstead, Suffolk, overlooking nearby Ickworth House. This Grade II* listed former parish church originally served a settlement at Ickworth that has since disappeared. It later had particular links with the estate’s household and workforce. Declared redundant during the 1970s, it has subsequently undergone conservation work and is now accessible to visitors.
The structure is medieval in origin but was extensively altered during the 1800s. The chancel was built around the middle of the 13th century, and the nave’s northern doorway dates to either that century or the next. Surviving details include an octagonal limestone font from the 1400s, a 17th-century pulpit adapted into three levels around 1775, and coloured glass panels of Flemish origin. An image of the Annunciation angel, drawn in red during the 15th century, remains in the chancel. Marble slabs and tablets record the Hervey family’s long association with Ickworth.
