About Church of St Peter and St Mary

The Church of St Peter and St Mary is a Church of England place of worship in central Stowmarket, Suffolk. Dating from the fourteenth century and protected at Grade I, it continues to serve the local parish, with services held regularly.

Built principally in the Decorated Gothic style, the church uses local flint complemented by dressed ashlar. Tree-ring analysis dates wood in the spire to 1362–63, around the period when the main structure was completed, while the four-stage tower with its battlemented top was added later. Three substantial Victorian restoration programmes included extensive interior work by Richard Phipson. The spire has undergone several replacements following storm damage and structural problems; the present timber version, completed in 1993–94, includes an outside gallery. Memorials commemorate local people killed in both world wars, while numerous monuments record the Tyrrell family, formerly landowners in the area.
