About St Mary's Church, Rickinghall Superior
St Mary’s Church, Rickinghall Superior is a redundant Anglican church south of Rickinghall village in Suffolk, beyond the A143. Dating from around 1350, it has Grade I protection and is maintained by the Churches Conservation Trust. It is one of two churches in Rickinghall dedicated to St Mary; the other remains in parish use in Rickinghall Inferior.
Built largely of flint rubble with stone and brick details, the church comprises a broad aisleless nave, a smaller chancel, a two-storey southern porch and a four-stage western tower. The nave was reconstructed during the mid-15th century, when the porch was also modified, and William Milner Fawcett oversaw a substantial restoration in 1868. Notable features include a 14th-century octagonal font, medieval piscinas and surviving pieces of 15th-century coloured glass. The tower has an embattled parapet, decorative flushwork and gargoyles, and houses six bells cast between 1712 and 1911.
