About St. Margaret's Church, Lowestoft
St. Margaret's Church, Lowestoft is the town’s historic Church of England parish church, dedicated to Margaret of Antioch. It occupies high ground to the north-west of central Lowestoft and remains a prominent local feature. Its blue-lit spire is visible from across the town and the site once helped mariners find their way. The church has Grade I protection and forms part of the Diocese of Norwich.
Built principally from flint, the medieval church was established by London’s Priory of St Bartholomew and dates to about 1350, though the tower is from the early fourteenth century. Considerable expansion in the fifteenth century produced the present nave and aisles. Victorian refurbishment followed, while the current pointed spire replaced an earlier timber structure in 1954. Inside are an octagonal fifteenth-century font, a brass lectern made around 1500, Robert Allen’s surviving Regency-period glazing and a memorial naming 711 Lowestoft men killed during the First World War.
