About Church of Our Lady Star of the Sea
The Church of Our Lady Star of the Sea serves Lowestoft’s Roman Catholic community from Gordon Road, close to the Suffolk town’s centre. It is an active parish church within the Diocese of East Anglia and has Grade II listed status. Its geographical position makes it the furthest-east Catholic parish church across the British Isles.
Catholics in Lowestoft were served from Great Yarmouth from 1867 and gathered in several hired spaces before establishing a parish in 1881. An early chapel occupied a net loft, but increasing attendance led to fundraising for more suitable premises. Local architects George Baines and F. W. Richards planned the present building in the Arts and Crafts tradition. Work formally commenced in August 1900, and the completed church celebrated its inaugural Mass on 5 June 1902. A Heritage Lottery Fund award of £25,400 supported external repairs in 2017.
