About Church of St Mary
The Church of St Mary is in Lound, Suffolk, and continues to serve as a Church of England parish church. It has Grade I listed status, awarded on 27 November 1954, reflecting the national significance of its historic fabric.
Originating in the Anglo-Saxon period, the church retains eleventh-century masonry within its tower, together with evidence of an earlier belfry. The tower’s uppermost third is built of red brick and belongs to work undertaken during the fifteenth or sixteenth century. Although the nave was initially erected in the twelfth century, it underwent reconstruction in the fourteenth. Its windows span dates from the thirteenth through to the fifteenth century. Inside the chancel are brass texts from the seventeenth century, while above the doorway on the south side hangs the coat of arms of Charles II, bearing the date 1673.
