About Holy Trinity Church, Long Melford
Holy Trinity Church, Long Melford, serves the Church of England parish in this Suffolk village. The building has Grade I protection and is distinguished by its imposing size and extensive collection of historic fabric. It remains especially significant for the amount of medieval glazing preserved within it.
Most of the present structure dates from a major rebuilding programme carried out from 1467 until 1497, largely paid for by local wool trader John Clopton. Designed in the late Gothic Perpendicular manner, it retains older elements, including part of the nave’s arcades and the former Lady Chapel, now called the Clopton Chantry Chapel. Medieval glass survives in many of the 74 decorated windows illuminating the nine-section nave. Lightning struck the principal tower in 1710; a brick replacement followed, before George Frederick Bodley reshaped it from 1898 to 1903 with flint and stone surfaces and four pinnacles. Interior highlights include Sir William Cordell’s monument and a fourteenth-century alabaster panel depicting the Nativity.
