About Church of St Peter
The Church of St Peter is a Church of England parish church in Leiston, Suffolk. Still serving its parish, it is designated Grade I for its considerable historical and architectural significance.
The circular tower and nave have their origins in the twelfth century, while the medieval chancel was enlarged eastwards around 1300. Nave and chancel share a long roof covered with thatch. The tower’s eight-sided upper stage was also added around 1300, followed later by a battlement-like parapet and four waterspouts carved as grotesques. Medieval survivals include an elaborately moulded northern doorway, a fifteenth-century pulpit and an eight-sided font decorated with lions, angels and wild men. The southern aisle, first created during the fifteenth century, was reconstructed for the Doughtys of Theberton Hall in the 1840s and holds family monuments. Inside the porch, a display preserves a fragment of Zeppelin L48, which was brought down close to the village in 1917.
