About Wattisham Strict Baptist Chapel
Wattisham Strict Baptist Chapel is a place of worship in Wattisham, in the Ipswich area of Suffolk. The chapel belongs to the Strict Baptist tradition and is recognised for its historic and architectural interest. It received Grade II listed status in 1980, providing formal protection for the building.
The congregation dates from 1763. During the 1780s, its members completed the first chapel specifically built for worship on the present site. That earlier structure served the congregation until it was replaced in 1825 by the chapel that stands today. Constructed in brick, the current building reflects the community’s development from an eighteenth-century congregation to one with a purpose-built nineteenth-century home.
