About St Peter's Church, Claydon
St Peter’s Church, Claydon, in Ipswich, Suffolk, is a former Church of England parish church overlooking the Gipping Valley. Designated Grade I, it has been maintained by the Churches Conservation Trust since 1988, following its closure for regular worship in 1977.
Although traditionally dated to 1401, parts of the nave appear to survive from the tenth or eleventh century. A fourteenth-century east window predates the Perpendicular west tower and north porch, which were added during the following century. Flint walls, limestone detailing and tiled roofs characterise the exterior, while seven stone figures stand along the tower parapet. Richard Phipson oversaw extensive work in 1852, when the chancel was largely reconstructed and transepts and organ chambers were introduced. Inside are an octagonal stone font from around 1400, carved roof bosses, a finely pierced pulpit and a two-manual Bevington organ made in 1863.
