About Walpole Old Chapel
Walpole Old Chapel stands on Halesworth Road in Walpole, near Halesworth, Suffolk. Now a redundant place of worship, it is protected at Grade II* and has been cared for by the Historic Chapels Trust since 1995. Occasional ecumenical services, concerts and other events are held there, and the building is licensed for marriages.
The structure began as a pair of late 16th-century farmhouses. Independent Christians leased the property after religious freedoms were extended to Nonconformists in 1689, adapting it for worship and adding a rear section around 1700. The timber-framed building has plastered walls, a tiled roof and some brickwork at one gable. Inside are a raised six-sided pulpit and matching canopy, round-headed windows, tiered galleries, box pews and a brick floor. An 18th-century light fitting with six branches hangs from the roof. Following closure in 1970, the chapel stood empty until its later conservation, which included restoring the historic interior colour scheme.
