About Church of St Michael the Archangel, Framlingham
The Church of St Michael the Archangel is a Church of England place of worship in Framlingham, Suffolk. Consecrated in honour of Saint Michael, it was accorded Grade I protection in 1966. It also has strong connections with the Howard family, several of whose members are commemorated or interred within the building.
Originating around 1150, the church was altered and extended repeatedly over the following centuries. Carved stonework supporting the arch into the chancel survives from the original century, although most of the present structure took shape between 1350 and 1555 in Perpendicular Gothic form. A roof dating to roughly 1521 has decorative fan-like patterns that mask its hammer-beam construction. Eight bells, produced from the 1400s through to the 1900s, are mounted in a late Victorian oak framework. The historic Thomas Thamar organ, created for Pembroke College in 1674, arrived in 1708 and underwent restoration in 1970. Significant memorials include those of Thomas Howard, Anne of York and Henry FitzRoy.
