About St Nicholas' Church, Feltwell
St Nicholas’ Church stands in Feltwell, Suffolk. Formerly Anglican, it is now redundant and protected at Grade I. The Churches Conservation Trust has responsibility for the building, while the Feltwell Historical and Archaeological Society looks after it locally. Although routine parish worship has ceased, two services take place annually.
Christian use of the site dates to about 683, with major reconstruction around 1072. The fifteenth century brought aisles, a clerestory and an eight-sided upper tower, followed by repairs after fire damage. Flint and brick form the main structure, complemented by dressed stone and slate roofing. Unusually, its width exceeds its length, and the chancel was taken down in 1862. Part of the western tower collapsed in 1898. Surviving details include early masonry, medieval arcades, decorative flushwork, a stone coffin and a Norman-style tower arch. An 1840 organ and a wooden cross made by a German prisoner during the Second World War remain inside.
