About St Mary's Church

St Mary’s Church is a Church of England church in Thornham Parva, Suffolk, within the Eye area. It has Grade I listed status. The church once served both Thornham Parva and nearby Thornham Magna, although the latter later became a parish in its own right.

A place of worship occupied the site by 1086, and fragments of Anglo-Saxon masonry survive in the present structure. Most of the building is from the twelfth century, with its construction dated to around 1150, and it has a thatched roof. Fourteenth-century paintings depict scenes from Christ’s early life and the death of St Edmund. The church also contains the Thornham Parva Retable, an altarpiece believed to have been made during the 1330s for a Dominican community, probably at Thetford. Basil Spence, Dame Anne Warburton, Frederick Grinke and Gareth Jones are buried in the churchyard.
