About Church of St Mary the Virgin
The Church of St Mary the Virgin is an Anglican parish church in Diss, Suffolk. It continues to serve as a place of parish worship and has Grade I protection in recognition of its historic and architectural importance.
Its medieval structure includes a circular Norman tower from the early twelfth century, approximately 29 feet wide and 62 feet tall. Considered the largest Norman example of this form in England, the tower lost its top in 1789 and remains uncovered. A nearby timber-faced turret, built during the eighteenth century, contains a bell and carries a weather vane. The nave, aisles and chancel largely belong to the fourteenth century, along with the richly decorated eight-sided font. An early fifteenth-century clerestory incorporates twelve windows and patterned flintwork. Other features include an organ placed against the closed tower opening, late Victorian seating adorned with carved people and creatures, and a south porch renewed in 1908.
