About St Andrew's Church, Covehithe
St Andrew’s Church, Covehithe, is a Church of England church in the Suffolk hamlet of Covehithe, close to an eroding stretch of coast. This Grade I listed building is partly ruined, but the smaller church created inside the medieval structure remains in use. Covehithe parish is now joined with nearby Benacre, while the surviving ruins and tower are cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust.
The church originated around 1350, with much of the larger medieval building dating from the following century. In 1672, after maintenance became unaffordable, permission was granted to dismantle its roof and construct a smaller, thatched church within the remains, reusing stonework and doorways. The flint-built ruins retain an imposing western tower, window openings and decorative flushwork. Inside are an octagonal fifteenth-century font, medieval pews with carved poppyheads, a wooden pulpit incorporating seventeenth-century carving, and the royal arms of George III.
