About St. Mary's Church, Bury St. Edmunds
St. Mary’s Church, Bury St. Edmunds is an active Church of England parish church in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. It also serves a civic role within the town and is designated Grade I. Its formal dedication commemorates the Assumption of Mary, the mother of Jesus.
King Sigeberht established an earlier church here in the seventh century. Abbot Anselm replaced it in the early 1100s, though that Norman structure has disappeared. The chancel, made around 1290, is the oldest surviving section. Extensive work from the 1300s to the 1500s added much of the nave, side aisles and tower. Inside, the wide hammerbeam roof carries carved angels and other figures, while the west end has a window measuring about 10.82 metres high. Mary Tudor, sister of Henry VIII and former Queen of France, was moved here for burial following the abbey’s demolition. A four-manual organ, originally constructed by John Gray in 1825, was later expanded and repeatedly rebuilt.
