About St Edmund's Church

St Edmund’s Church is an active Roman Catholic parish church on Westgate Street in central Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. Part of the Diocese of East Anglia and its local deanery, it holds regular Sunday and weekday Masses. The church is protected as a Grade II* listed building and has links with St Edmund’s Catholic Primary School.

A Jesuit mission began locally in 1762, followed in 1763 by a small chapel dedicated to the Immaculate Conception. As the congregation grew, the chapel was replaced in 1837 by the present Grecian-style building, designed by Charles Day and dedicated to St Edmund the Martyr. Features include a marble entrance surround adapted in 1959 from a fireplace at Rushbrooke Hall. A Blessed Sacrament chapel, first consecrated in 1791, was rededicated in 1971. Three sealed arches on the north side contain memorial stones for Jesuit clergy who served the parish during the early nineteenth century.
