Saint Edmundsbury Cathedral, on Angel Hill in Bury St Edmunds, is the cathedral of the Church of England Diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich and the bishop’s seat. It also remains a parish church and is protected as a Grade I listed building.
A church occupied the site by 1065, and a replacement dedicated to St James followed during the early 12th century. Much of the present building dates from a major reconstruction begun in 1503 in the Perpendicular Gothic style. After becoming a cathedral in 1914, it was substantially extended, with a new quire, transepts, cloisters and chapels added from the late 1950s onwards. The 46-metre Millennium Tower, built with brick and faced in Barnack and Clipsham stone, was completed in 2005. Interior features include medieval stained glass, a font designed by George Gilbert Scott and works by Brian Whelan and Elisabeth Frink. Twelve bells hang in the neighbouring Norman Tower.
