About Church of St Mary the Virgin

The Church of St Mary the Virgin is an active Church of England parish church in Burwell, Suffolk. It shares a benefice with St Ethelreda’s in Reach and is protected as a Grade I listed building.

Although parts date from the 12th century, most of the church was rebuilt during the middle and later 1400s. Its exterior is constructed from flint rubble, with clunch facing inside. The five-bay nave has aisles, while the three-bay chancel stands above a crypt. Two Norman stages remain in the west tower, which was enlarged with three octagonal levels during the 15th century; a small spire was added in 1799. Notable medieval details include elaborate stonework over the chancel arch, a faded image of St Christopher, original timber roofs and a fan-vaulted north porch. The octagonal font and the lower section of the rood screen also belong to the main rebuilding period. Restorations followed during the 19th century.
