About Saint Mary's
Saint Mary's is a former Anglican parish church in central Bungay, Suffolk. Now redundant, it is cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust, while local supporters arrange concerts and other events. The church, together with the neighbouring priory ruins, has Grade I listed status, and its former benefice is joined with Holy Trinity Church.
Originally serving a Benedictine priory founded during the late twelfth century, much of the surviving structure was built across the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. After the priory closed in 1536, it became Bungay’s parish church. Constructed from flint and stone in the Perpendicular style, it has aisles, a clerestory and a 110-foot tower crowned by four ornate pinnacles. Fire caused serious damage in 1688, with repairs completed before reopening in 1701, followed by restoration in 1879. Interior details include carved roof bosses, a charitable bread cupboard, an organ rebuilt in 1961 and eight bells cast by Thomas Mears II in 1820.
