About St Botolph's Chapel
St Botolph’s Chapel stands in Botesdale, Suffolk, and belongs to the Church of England. Originally serving the wider parish centred on St Mary’s in Redgrave, it became the parish church when St Mary’s was made redundant in 2004. The building is recognised for its historic importance with Grade II* listed status.
The earliest known record of the chapel dates from 1338, when it appeared in court documents. About 1470, John Sheriffe’s bequest of land and other assets enabled its transformation into a chantry. The Crown acquired it in 1547 amid the Reformation’s religious suppressions. In 1576, Sir Nicholas Bacon established a grammar school within the former chapel. This educational use continued until the school shut in 1878. Five years later, the building resumed its earlier role as a place of worship serving the parish.
