About St John the Evangelist
St John the Evangelist is an active Church of England parish church serving Essington, near Wolverhampton in Staffordshire. Standing on Wolverhampton Road, it remains in regular use for worship and local gatherings. The building has a Grade A designation on the local heritage list.
The present church dates from 1932 and occupies a three-acre plot in Essington village centre. Its inter-war design is particularly noted for expressive brickwork. It replaced an iron mission church erected on Hobnock Road in 1859 as part of Bushbury parish. That earlier building had oil lighting and was heated by a coke stove, while its successor introduced electricity and central heating. The original structure later became a church hall and continued in that role until 1966.
