About The Church of Saint Mary the Virgin
The Church of Saint Mary the Virgin stands on Church Street in Uttoxeter, Staffordshire. It is the town’s active Church of England parish church and the principal church in the Uttoxeter deanery. The building is recognised for its architectural and historic importance with Grade II* listed status.
The church originated in the 14th century, when its tower and spire were constructed to a design by Henry Yevele. After the building became inadequate for the congregation, James Trubshaw redesigned the nave in 1828. Frederick Josias Robinson later created an enlarged chancel, completed in 1877 and extended by 14 feet. This work included an organ gallery above the vestry and retained the earlier east window with its stained glass. A pipe organ made by William Hill & Sons is housed inside. Eight bells hang in the tower: six were cast by Abraham Rudhall in 1729, while John Warner & Sons supplied the treble and tenor in 1874.
