About Saint Mary's Church
Saint Mary's Church is a Roman Catholic place of worship on Balance Street, Uttoxeter, Staffordshire. It remains part of St Mary’s parish, together with Sacred Heart at Abbots Bromley. This Grade II-listed building is commonly called the Catholic Church locally, helping to distinguish it from Uttoxeter’s other church bearing the same dedication.
Augustus Pugin supplied the design, his first for a church. Father Morgan, associated with the Cresswell mission, was responsible for the project. Work commenced on 4 October 1838, with the doors opening on 22 August the following year. The building gained a chancel in 1879 and underwent another enlargement during 1913. Pugin also planned the attached presbytery beside the church; this residence was extended at a later date.
