About St James the Less
St James the Less stands on Uttoxeter Road in Longton, Stoke-on-Trent. It remains an active Church of England parish church and is protected as a Grade II listed building. Its listing followed a 1990s survey that identified further Stoke-on-Trent buildings considered worthy of statutory protection.
Built in 1833–34 at a cost of £10,000, the church was funded under the church-building programme led by parliamentary commissioners. It accommodated 2,000 people and was planned to serve Longton’s expanding population, although an early commentator questioned whether such a large capacity was needed because Nonconformist traditions were strong locally. James Trubshaw designed the building, one of several commissioners’ churches attributed to him. Constructed from Hollington sandstone, it has a tower at the western end, a nave arranged in six bays with a clerestory, and a compact chancel terminating in a many-sided apse.
